'Be clear on conditions of legal car modifications'

Thursday, September 24, 2009

MELVIN JONG
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
Thursday, September 24, 2009

SOME local car enthusiasts lauded the efforts of the Land Transport Department in formulating a new guideline for car modifications, but raised concerns on the direction and focus of such modifications.

Declining to be named, a 26-year-old owner of a highly-modified Honda Civic said that relevant authorities have to be clear on what sort of modifications are dangerous before deciding what is legal or illegal.

"They need to realise that there is nothing wrong with customising the looks of your car with professionally-built body kits, it makes our cars more unique and strengthens the bond between the vehicle and driver," said the government worker.

"The Land Transport Department should instead be more worried about modifications done to car engines, absorbers and exhaust systems, but even then it should be ok if these parts are installed and tuned by professionals," he added.

The 26-year-old said that authorities should look into car accessories stores and workshops involved with unsafe car tune ups and modifications. "These are the cars that gives us a bad name. They just try to dump as much power into their cars with the wrong parts, making their cars less reliable and more dangerous."

Li Cheng, 28, said that this new guideline should be directed more towards suppliers of illegal car modification parts. "If you don't sell anything illegal then no one can buy it... this is what the relevant authorities should look out for."

"They also have to make sure that only quality goods and parts are imported and sold. Nothing of inferior quality such as cheap and weak rims that might shatter upon impact should be allowed on public roads," added Li.

The technician said that while his personal car has not been altered, he could easily understand why others are doing it.

"Your car is a part of your life. You want it to stand out from others and make it your own," he said, adding that he supports all sorts of car modifications, as long as they comply with the Sultanate's safety regulations.

"In the end it comes down to the responsibility of the driver. There is nothing wrong with modifying your car's sound system because it is not something dangerous, but it will become dangerous if you blast loud music which might distract others, making you less aware of your surroundings at the same time," he explained.

Hj Amin, father of a car enthusiast, said that such guidelines should have been made available a long time ago. "People have bought car accessories to find out that it is not legal during a roadblock. It becomes useless and a waste of money. They need to know what they can do to their cars."

"With a proper guideline, they will no longer have any excuse if they are caught with such modifications," added the 45-year-old businessman.

Hj Amin said that there are a number of modified cars on the road but understands that most of these modifications are to improve the car's appearance.

His real concerns were cars that have been modified for performance reasons. "Let them do what they want with the looks of their cars as long as they don't do anything that can upset their cars' balance and settings such as increasing its power or lowering the suspension," he said.

Another car enthusiast who opted for anonymity said that the car modification industry is also heavily influenced by the market. "I have spent over $7,000 on my car. A large portion of the money is spent only on the bodykit, spoiler and paint job. All of these are quality parts and fitted by professionals."

"What gives us a bad name are cheap car modifications that cut corners. Why do I buy a spoiler that costs $900 instead of a $200 one? Because it is safer and of better quality. Others might buy cheaper products that might be badly designed and built," he said.

A female companion agreed, saying that her car modifications were done by professionals with safety in mind. "I can definitely guarantee you that my car is safe on the road and is of no danger to anyone," she said, adding that safety is one of the most important issue to her when modifying her vehicle.

AUDI R8 SPYDER 5.2 FSI QUATTRO

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

AUDI R8 SPYDER 5.2 FSI QUATTRO

The new Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI Quattro unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor show. Continue to read the Audi Press Release Below:

• Audi high-performance sports car with lightweight cloth top

• Distinctive styling, carbon fibre body parts

• Mid-mounted V10 engine producing 386 kW (525 hp) and exceptional performance

Exceptional performance and breathtaking dynamism coupled with the intense sensations of open-top driving: Audi presents the R8 Spyder5.2 FSI quattro. Its lightweight cloth top opens and closes fully automatically; several body parts are made of a carbon fibre composite material.
The V10 engine produces 386 kW and launches the open-top two-seater to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 313 km/h. Featuring technologies such as the Audi Space Frame (ASF), quattro permanent all-wheel drive, full-LED headlights and with an innovative seatbelt microphone available as an option, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro is the new top-of-the-range Audi.

12-audi-r8-spyder-live

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro makes a powerful statement. The sculptured lines of the emotion-packed, high-performance sports car are a fascinating and unique interpretation of its dynamism. Unlike the Coupé, the Spyder does not have sideblades behind the doors. The side panels and the large cover over the storage compartment for the cloth top are made of a carbon fibre composite. Two arched cowls, which extend to the spoiler lip and include large, integrated air vents, give the rear of the open-top two-seater a powerful profile.

16-audi-r8-spyder-live

Like every open-top Audi, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro has a cloth top – an uncompromising solution for a high-performance sports car. The soft top’s approximate weight is a mere 30 kilograms; it thus keeps the vehicle’s total weight and centre of gravity low. The top takes up little space when open and is a harmonious design element when closed.The electrohydraulic soft top opens and closes in 19 seconds, even while driving at speeds up to 50 km/h. When opened, it folds like a Z into its storage compartment over the V10 engine.

21-audi-r8-spyder-live

The compartment cover opens and closes automatically. The heated glass window, which is separate from the cloth top, is lowered into the bulkhead. It can be independently raised and lowered at the press of a switch, with the top up or down. An additional net-like wind deflector comes standard and can be latched into the bulkhead behind the seats in two easy steps.

07-audi-r8-spyder-live

The V10 engine with the aluminum crankcase, much of which is hand-built, follows in the grand motorsports tradition at Audi. The normally aspirated engine produces 530 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. Peak output of 386 kW is reached at 8,000 rpm, and the rev limit is not reached until 8,700 rpm.

In the version with manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro weighs only 1,720 kilograms thanks primarily to its aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) body. Despite reinforcements in the area of the sills, the centre tunnel, the rear wall, the floor pan and the A- and B-pillars, the body weighs only 216 kilograms– just 6 kilograms more than that of the R8 Coupé.

10-audi-r8-spyder-live

The side sills of the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro are broad and angular. V10 badges on the flanks allude to the power of the engine. The exhaust system ends in two large, oval tailpipes, and the fully lined underbody ends in an upturned diffuser. The rear spoiler extends automatically at higher speeds.

Audi offers the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro with a choice of three colors for the top. The body is available in eleven paint finishes, with metallic and pearl effect finishes standard. The windshield frame is coated with anodized aluminum.

Highlighting the list of standard equipment is a generous full-leather package featuring Fine Nappa leather, an excellent sound system from Bang & Olufsen, a deluxe automatic air conditioning system and heated seats. Six different interior colours are available.

The latest version of the navigation system plus with MMI operating logic is also standard in the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro. Equipped with a manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro consumes an average of 14.9 litres of fuel per 100 km – a good figure given its power. With R tronic, this figure improves to 13.9 litres.

The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI is also available with an optional automatic six-speed transmission. The R tronic offers a normal and a sport program as well as a fully automatic and a manual mode. The manual mode allows the driver to make lightning-fast gear changes using the joystick on the centre tunnel or with the paddles on the steering wheel. The open-air sports car also comes with “Launch Control” – a program that manages engagement of the clutch perfectly to maximize acceleration at start.

The chassis is tuned for good comfort, thanks in part to standard Audi magnetic ride technology. This uses magnetic fields in the shock absorbers to adjust their response to road conditions within milliseconds and adapt to the driver’s style. The driver can choose between two base characteristics. A sports suspension with conventional shock absorbers is available as an option.

Hurrah..the Lexus LF-Ch in full glory

Lexus LF-Ch Concept car

Here's the recently unveiled Lexus LF-Ch concept car at Frankfurt Motorshow 2009. Continue to read below Lexus Press Release:

LEXUS PRESENTS THE LF-Ch CONCEPT

* Concept proposing the first Lexus full hybrid for the premium compact segment;
* Advanced interior design with asymmetric dashboard and Remote Touch controls;
* Blacked-out B pillars and concealed rear door handles create the look of a pillarless coupé;
* L-finesse exterior styling with powerful surfacing and hand-sculpted details;
* World debut at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show.

Lexus LF-Ch full hybrid concept makes its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show, and is Lexus’s first approach to the competitive premium compact segment.

It reflects the growing demand for cars that are smaller and more fuel and CO2 efficient, but with no compromise in levels of refinement and driving pleasure. By next year the compact segment is expected to claim the largest share of the European premium car market.

LF-Ch concept combines compact dimensions, stylish five-door, full hybrid technology and low emissions to satisfy the most demanding customer requirements and to appeal to a new, younger generation of customers.

Exterior design

LF-Ch concept presents a powerful evolution of Lexus’s L-finesse design philosophy. Rooted in Japanese culture, L-finesse is expressed in every aspect of the car, not only in the visual harmony between the interior and exterior design, but also in the combination of leading-edge engineering and technology with a user-friendly simplicity of function.

The designers focused on the careful juxtaposition of opposing major and minor elements. Intriguing contrasts are created between the powerful, machine-like overall surfacing of the bodywork and the painstaking detail of even the smallest elements, creating a synergy between technologically driven design and a fluid, hand-sculpted quality.

A new, bolder Lexus grille design sits above a deep, full-width bumper and air dam, giving a perfect balance of precision and power. The sharply sculpted, aerodynamic front wings overlap the front bumper to create deep, front brake-cooling air intakes and give LF-Ch a powerful and purposeful wide-track stance.

In profile, the tapered side glazing, a muscular, rising beltline and a sharply truncated rear overhang project the car’s premium compact character. The steeply raked windscreen, long flowing roofline, blacked-out B pillars and rear door handles integrated in the C pillar window trim combine to give the appearance of a sporting pillarless coupe.

At the rear the trailing edge of the roof overhangs the rear window to create an integrated rear spoiler. The tailgate section has a pronounced step, which flows from the muscular wheelarches and is anchored by the wraparound tail lamp design. Aerodynamic detailing of the lower bumper smoothes airflow from beneath the car and feeds ventilation to the rear brakes.

Subtle finishing touches include discreet Lexus hybrid blue badging and sharply tapering chrome mouldings. The harmonious synergy of the design is further expressed in the contrasting, lively yellow exterior finish and calming blue interior illumination.

Interior design

The principles of L-finesse are carried through to the interior where again a powerful simplicity harmonises with hand-crafted quality in the detailing to create a calm, efficient and elegant design.

The cabin features a strongly asymmetric dashboard that is firmly driver-focused with outstanding ergonomics. The driver’s needs are seamlessly anticipated in several surprising elements, for example, when the car is started a greeting is presented on the navigation screen and an ambient lighting pattern appears in the headliner, creating a sophisticated lounge feel.

Extensive use of semi-aniline leather, polished aluminium, wood and soft-touch materials reinforces the theme of harmonious contrast in the dashboard, door panels and seating. The design of the seats is inspired by high quality furniture, with exposed metal frames, lightweight leather and grained black wood used in inter-related layers, shaped to reflect the intrinsic nature of each material used.

The driving position is low and well-supported, with a wide-grip steering wheel with paddle shift controls and an instrument binnacle housing large twin dials embellished with a turbine motif.

To help keep the driver’s focus on the road ahead, distracting instrumentation and switchgear has been kept to a minimum by using Lexus Remote Touch controls, as first seen in new RX 450h. Using a multi-information display on top of the dashboard, Remote Touch works like a computer mouse, letting the driver access control and customise a range of information, entertainment and vehicle set-up programmes.

As with every Lexus, hospitality is at the heart of the ownership experience. To this end, LF-Ch’s comprehensive on-board entertainment package includes iPhone docking for rear seat passengers.

Powertrain and driving performance

Allied to a wide track, long wheelbase and low centre of gravity, LF-Ch’s full hybrid powertrain is engineered to deliver all the performance customers expect from a premium compact hatchback, while at the same time returning low fuel consumption, CO2 and NOx emissions.

With the benefit of the full hybrid technology of Lexus Hybrid drive, the car can be driven in a fully electric EV mode, a power option that is not available to drivers of mild hybrids. This allows for urban driving with minimal noise and zero emissions.
