For the first time in MINI history, a diesel engine is now available for the open top MINI; The Cooper D Convertible. It features a 110hp diesel engine which can achieve a 70mpg and emits 105g/km of CO2. In terms of performance, the Cooper D Convertible can accelerate from 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds and managed to get a top speed of 195km/h. As for the gasoline engines, it remain unchanged from 2010 models and it carried over to the latest 2011 models.

MINI UK has announced that from this August all MINI models will bear fresh design features both inside and out. Also, two brand new diesel engines that achieve CO2 emissions of 99 grams/km and the first MINI Convertible powered by a diesel engine will also make their debuts at the same time. This range makeover comes hot on the heels of the new, more economical petrol engines announced in March and the forthcoming MINI Countryman. Like the Countryman all these changes that refresh MINI will be available in MINI showrooms during September 2010. The pace of MINI change never slackens.

"The pace at which MINI is bringing new technology to the market is breathtaking" said Jochen Goller, Director of MINI UK. "The current generation of MINI Hatch, Clubman and Convertible are all quite recent cars and were state of the art when they were launched. With the refreshment of MINI design and the extraordinarily economical new diesel engines MINI has moved the game forward even further."

"With the introduction in August of the Model refresh and MINI's strong MINIMALISM strategy it now positions the MINI Brand having 26 core models (including Countryman), 23 of which are underneath 160 g/km CO2, 14 under 130 g/km and 8 under the 120 g/km threshold, in addition to the MINI Hatch One D and Cooper D now having 99 g/km and being congestion charge exempt. We are extremely confident that MINI can continue to hold its market leading position in an ever increasing competitive sector", said Lee Connolly Product and Planning Manager, MINI UK.

New diesel engines bring MINI record low fuel consumption and 99 grams of CO2

Following the March introduction of new, more efficient petrol engines for the MINI range, two all new diesel engines make their debut in the revised and refreshed range. The 1.6 litre, four cylinder engines are based on the accumulated development prowess of diesel power units by the BMW Group. Accordingly they share the efficient bore/stroke ratio of BMW's two litre units, all aluminium construction for light weight, common rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. The result is a state of the art diesel engine that marries strong power delivery, high torque from low down the rev range that delivers pulling power whenever it is called for, supreme economy and low emissions and engine acoustics that set new standards in the premium compact car segment.

The results are nothing short of amazing. Both the MINI One D and MINI Cooper D achieve the same low fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. These values are an absolute record for any series production car produced by the BMW Group. However, such is the efficiency of both engines that the driving qualities deliver MINI brio in spades. The Cooper D Hatch accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 9.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 123mph. The huge torque of 270 Nm is available from 1,750 rpm ensuring that it is always ready to harness the engine's power. The less powerful MINI One D Hatch (90 PS / 66 kW as compared to the Cooper D's 112 PS / 82 kW) has a torque value of 215Nm available from the same low engine rev range but still reaches 62mph in 11.4 seconds and hits a top speed of 115 mph.

The new diesel-powered MINIs are MINIMALISM personified. In addition to the high efficiency of the new diesel engine, they employ fuel-saving and emission-lowering technology including Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start-Stop, Gearshift Indicator, Electromechanical Power Steering and demand-controlled auxiliary units such as the alternator. All of these technologies and the standard six-speed manual gearbox play a role as it ekes the most out of every drop of fuel while also minimising the tailpipe emissions.

In the same vein a diesel particulate filter and an oxidation catalyst is standard fitment on all the new MINI diesel models. They share the same housing and operate maintenance-free for life. As with all MINI models they all comply with the EU5 emission standard.

New models: MINI Convertible with diesel power for the first time

For the first time in MINI history a diesel engine will appear under the bonnet of an open MINI when the MINI Cooper D Convertible joins the range in August. Using the same 112hp engine as the Hatch, the Convertible accelerates to 62mph in just 10.3 seconds and can reach a top speed of 121mph. Despite this performance potential, the MINI Cooper D Convertible sips diesel fuel at a parsimonious 70 mpg and emits just 105g/km of CO², the lowest emitting and most economical ‘full' convertible vehicle on the UK market today.

2011 MINI Cooper D Convertible

Like the Convertible models, the fresh visual cues apply to the Clubman models as well. Similar record efficiency values apply to the diesel-engined Clubman range that includes the all new MINI One D Clubman for the first time. Both display comparable performance to the Hatch as well as similar miserly fuel consumption and low emissions. The Clubman is also equipped with a new retractable cargo cover in the luggage compartment.

Design changes - all the fun of the flair

All existing MINI models - Hatch, Clubman and Convertible - benefit from design refreshments to both exterior and interior that bring a fresh, dynamic style to the range. At the front, a new bumper with a lower air intake serves not only to update MINI's face but also to improve pedestrian protection courtesy of larger deformation zones. New style fog lamps adorn either side of the air intake which on MINI One and Cooper features a black cross bar to emphasize the car's low, wide stance. On the Cooper S two purposeful air intakes feed the brake discs and enhance the sporting intent of this model.

The typical round MINI headlights display new light elements, with optional Xenon lamps featuring Adaptive headlights (bendy lights) as an option. A new side indicator has a distinctive design of concentric circles and sits in the redesigned side gill housings.

At the rear, a new bumper the tail and brake lights are now LEDs while the brake lights use dynamic intensity lighting that varies according to the deceleration force applied. Pulsating light affords following drivers an opportunity to gauge the urgency of the braking manoeuvre. The LED design also gives a distinctive light design at night. Integrated reversing and rear fog lamps are also new and are housed in the rear bumper.

Along with five new dynamic paint colours and five new alloy wheel designs the new MINI models are subtlely different, yet immediately distinctive.

Interior style

The interior of all MINI models has undergone a significant makeover too. The centre console, the steering wheel and the air conditioning and audio controls have all been modified to enhance the elegance and premium quality of the MINI range. They also serve to add functionality and improved ergonomics for MINI owners. Apart from the practical benefits of the new interiors, the ambience is further enhanced by new materials and colour lines. In total there are six new upholstery choices, three new fascia options and two new interior colour lines for door and side panels.

Inverse colour option for MINI JCW

The MINI John Cooper Works and JCW Clubman have not been left out of the changes. For the first time a MINI model will be offered with an Inverse colour option. It is Chili red with a contrasting colour for the roof and door mirrors. Complementing this unique and striking body treatment will be the option of Black Challenge alloy wheels, while inside the standard equipment includes anthracite instruments, a Chili red fascia, black lounge leather seats with red piping, red stitching on the gear-and hand-brake lever and red trim on the ignition key.

Audi researching technologies for active safety

· Audi presents three active safety projects
· Subprojects: “Active Emergency Braking,” “Safety for Pedestrians and
Cyclists,” “Driving Safety and Attentiveness”
Mendig, June 23, 2010 – Employees of the Audi Driver Assistance Systems project house and Audi Electronics Venture GmbH are presenting three projects from the realm of active safety at the concluding event of the AKTIV research initiative.

“The development of predictive systems for vehicle safety is already a focus at Audi today. The information gleaned from this research provides significant value-added for our daily development work and is of vital importance for the next generation of vehicles,” says Dr. Ulrich Widmann, Head of Vehicle Safety Development at AUDI AG.

The engineers of AUDI AG and Audi Electronics Venture GmbH have looked into the future of active safety for three subprojects as part of the AKTIV research initiative. This field of research is focused
on systems that intervene actively in the driving process and thus help to defuse critical situations
and avoid accidents.

AKTIV is derived from the German for “Adaptive and Cooperative Technologies for Intelligent Traffic.” Over the course of a four-year research period, the project partners developed new driver assistance systems, information technologies and possible solutions for efficient traffic management with the aim of making future traffic safer and more fluid.

“Safety for Pedestrians and Cyclists”
The aim of the “Safety for Pedestrians and Cyclists” subproject is to enhance the safety of all traffic participants. The researchers identified typical accident scenarios, classified the associated injury severity and derived measures for a concept of action.

To simulate the “seeing vehicle,” the engineers built a test vehicle with a forward-looking, 3D-imaging sensor system. A processing unit for the 3D environmental data identifies the respective traffic situation and initiates a concept of action for braking and steering. This will enable potential accident situations involving pedestrians to be defused.

“Active Emergency Braking” and “Driving Safety and Attentiveness”
Audi is working on the next generation of active safety systems in the “Active Emergency Braking” subproject. Going beyond the scope of the systems currently available in production vehicles, these systems also consider additional objects in the vehicle’s surroundings such as other traffic participants and guardrails in addition to the immediate object of the collision. This results in an earlier intervention point for automatically initiated braking to avoid an accident.

The time of braking can also be advanced based on information about the driver. If the driver is distracted, he or she will not recognize the situation in time and react adequately. In these cases, it makes sense to initiate braking even sooner.

The engineers at AEV GmbH use a camera-based observation system to determine the driver’s level of attentiveness. A camera records the position of the head and the orientation of the driver’s head. These data are then used to deduce the attentiveness of the driver.

The new brake function presented at the event reflects Audi’s systematic philosophy of assisting the driver in critical situations, thus helping to avoid accidents or at least mitigate accident severity.

The results of the three projects are flowing into ongoing series development of predictive vehicle safety systems and help to further enhance safety on the roads.

HKS F-Con V Pro

Saturday, June 19, 2010

As we all know there are many choices of ECU that are available in our country such as the HKS F Con V Pro, Apexi Power FC, Microtech, AutoTronic, Greddy Emanage, Wolf 3D, Link etc and choosing ecu is all about preferences and tuner availability.

HKS F-con V Pro ver.3.30

The HKS F Con V Pro is one of the well known standalone ECU in Brunei which currently can only be tuned by Ohura Shumpei as he is the only HKS power writer in Brunei. The V Pro was chosen by some of the featured cars such as the Street Spec S15, The Twin Air Trek, Jin Hou R33, the sleeper R33 and the Zero Sport WRX. There are some lucky enough to have their HKS F Con V Pro tuned by Susumo Koyama of JUN himself when he was in Brunei.

The reason why the HKS F Con V Pro was used was because of its reputation in Japan Tuning industry commonly seen in Hot Version, Best Motoring, Option and also used by Top Secret and Jun in their high powered vehicle. This just shows the potential of the HKS V Pro unit.

Even though these rides push around 350-800hp the F Con V Pro 32x32 resolution for the fuel and ignition timing allows for a more control finer tuning thus more power and engine response. What does 32x32 mean? Try using Microsoft Excel and select 32 horizontal and 32 vertical and thats how wide the RPM to Ignition timing/Fuel correction the V Pro is able to tune. And also the F Con V Pro allows the user to remove the air flow meter for a more unrestricted airflow to the intake.

For some car models, a plug and play harness is readily available for the F Con V Pro so there is no need to worry about its wiring connection.

Audi achieves record victory at Le Mans with new technology

Monday, June 14, 2010

  • First Le Mans exploit with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG)
  • New distance record thanks to efficiency and reliability
  • All three Audi R15 TDI cars in top three places

Ingolstadt/Le Mans, June 13, 2010 - For the ninth time Audi has won the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans and thus equalized Ferrari’s position in the roll of honor in the French endurance classic. Only Porsche’s track record reflects more victories.

At the 78th edition of the race, efficiency and reliability were the decisive factors yet again - both are special fortes of the Audi brand which has a reputation of developing highly efficient automobiles. The three Audi R15 TDI cars of Audi Sport Team Joest ran without the slightest technical problems over the entire distance and occupied the top three places after the fastest Le Mans race of all time. After 2000, 2002 and 2004, Audi thus managed to achieve a one-two-three triumph at Le Mans for the fourth time.
"Everyone at Audi can be proud of this historic exploit. Reliability, efficiency and sustainability are particularly important topics for car manufacturers today. And these are exactly the areas in which we have demonstrated our expertise this weekend," commented Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler, who witnessed the captivating race live on location. "It was one of the most thrilling races in Le Mans history, a do-or-die battle. This one-two-three victory is the fourth 1-2-3 for Audi at Le Mans and no doubt the most valuable victory claimed after the fiercest battle in our company’s history. I express my thanks and great respect to the entire squad. They have performed an incredible and flawless feat of energy. Peugeot was a formidable rival who required us to give everything. We express our respect to the French squad for this."

"After taking third place last year, it was our declared aim to bring the Le Mans trophy back to Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm, and we managed to do this in an impressive way," said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "I’m incredibly proud of this squad and sincerely thank the entire team and everyone who has contributed to this achievement."

The ninth triumph - in total - of the brand at Le Mans was also made possible by a technology which Audi Sport developed for racing during the past three years in strict secrecy: the V10 TDI engine of the Audi R15 TDI with an approximate power output of 440 kW has a turbo-charger with Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG).
VTG turbo-chargers are standard with Audi TDI engines in production vehicles. Their use at Le Mans helps the Audi engineers to continue to develop the technology for smaller, highly efficient turbo engines to be used in the future. "At Le Mans we’re dealing with temperatures above 1,000 degrees centigrade which have not been encountered with production engines so far," explains Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport. "As a result of downsizing, production development will enter into similar temperature ranges. This makes VTG another good example of how the technology transfer between motorsport and the production side of the house works at Audi."

In 2010 the demands made on diesel engines were particularly high due to the restrictions imposed by the regulations. "Squeezing higher output out of the engines without sacrificing reliability posed a great challenge which our team mastered in an outstanding manner," said Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich after the race. "We did not use the full potential of the V10 TDI engine this year in order to be absolutely on the safe side. That’s why it was clear to us even before the race that we wouldn’t have the fastest car - but a very reliable and efficient one. The development objective of the R15 plus was 20 percent higher efficiency. We managed to achieve this. We’ve been working very hard for this exploit over the past few months. This makes this success, which was enabled by a perfect team performance as well, even more rewarding."

The victorious Audi R15 TDI with Timo Bernhard (Germany), Romain Dumas (France) and Mike Rockenfeller (Germany) completed a total of 397 laps in the 24 hours. With the covered distance of 5,410 kilometers, the trio broke the 1971 record set by Dr. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep in the Porsche 917 that was considered unbeatable because the Hunaudières straight at that time had no chicanes - another demonstration of the performance capabilities of Audi TDI technology.

Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller drove an absolutely flawless race on their way to their first Le Mans victory and the new historic record. Except for a slow puncture shortly before the end of the race and a right-hand mirror that had come off, the race went without the slightest problems for the winners. Second place was taken by Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Treluyer on whose R15 TDI the front bodywork had to be changed twice after contact with the track barriers.
The 2008 winners, Dindo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish, who were the best-placed Audi team in the early phase, were struck by major misfortune. Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen had to evade a slow GT2 vehicle on Saturday night and slid backwards against the track barrier of the Porsche corners in the process. With fast lap times, Capello, Kristensen and McNish pushed back into the group of the front runners and in the end were rewarded with a podium result.

GTR R35 Test Drive

Sunday, June 13, 2010

13/6/2010 Boustead held a GT-R Media Test Drive at the Empire Grandhall. The exclusive event showcased the GT-R MY10 (version 3), but in the United States it's known as MY11 model.

Mr.Lim Jin Lee begins the event by briefing the press more detailed features of the GTR so that they could try it out during the test drive session. He also briefed on how to sustain the vehicle under the right maintenance and given the proper care of it.

Lim Jin Hou briefing the route and safety precautions before beginning the test drive session

The GTR is truly a well built car with amazing performance and handling that can compete with some of the supercars which cost 2-3x the price of the GTR. After watching the GTR on the road, on DVDs and reading all about it we can only wonder how it feels to drive it to its limits.

Thanks to Boustead for the amazing experience to try out all the features and driving one of Japan's legendary sports car.

Starting off with the performance, the VR38DETT engine is very responsive compared to any other car that is moded over 400hp. This is because in order to produce a car to go over 400hp like the Lancer Evo and the Subaru STI bigger turbo's need to be used which can cause turbo lag and the transmission need to be upgraded to support the power which sometimes reduce driving comfort with the hard clutch. However the the twin IHI turbo on the VR38DETT spools up very quickly ad combined with the DSG gearbox which makes super fast shifting.

The chassis of the R35 and the suspension are very well tuned which produces a fine balance between handling and comfort. When accelerating the GTR the ride still felt comfortable with the G force pushing the driver and passangers to their seat without realising how fast they were going. Pushing the suspension switch to R mode further stiffens the suspension.

The new ATTESA ET-S 4WD system and the HICAS four-wheel steering did its magic on the corners which allows even normal daily drivers to enter the corners at high speeds and allows a more experienced drivers to go even faster. And it does all of this without the driver even knowing it.

The next test is the GTR's launch control which can be done very easily and helps the GTR to launch perfectly all the time. Once the brake pedal is released the sudden G force could be felt with its amazing acceleration.

Last but not least is testing the huge Brembo brakes with is also equipped with ABS which really bites to match the performance of the ride.

After giving the press a chance to test drive the GTR, Lim Jin Hou showed his driving skill and the potential of the GTR.

With all the amazing performance of the GTR it doesn't stop the GTR owners form modding it by installing aftermarket parts to make it faster where there are already some local R35 pushing over 600hp with the HKS GT600, Greddy Twin TD-06 turbo kit and the Switzer P800 kit to improve the top end power of the GTR which is already more than enough.
