Bandar Seri Begawan. 16.12.2011, QAF Auto Sdn Bhd (Exclusive importer and distributor of BMW automobiles in the Sultanate) has announced the all new variants of the highly successful BMW 5 series; BMW 520i, BMW 528i and BMW528i Touring.
Since its inception, the new BMW 5 series has already won more than 70 international awards, including the ‘red dot design award’, the title “Germany’s Favourite car”, US-American and Australian NCAP crash test as well as “Car of the Year” awards in the UK, Portugal, India, Thailand, Mexico, New Zealand and numerous other countries.
With its seductive styling, its unrivaled balance between sporty performance and comfort, and an extensive range of innovative equipment features, this series quickly established itself as the world market leader in its segment. Now, new engine versions and specification upgrades will lend this model even greater variety and appeal.
The new BMW 520i is equipped with a 2.0litre 4 cylinder BMW TwinPower turbo technology engine develops maximum power of 184hp and maximum torque of 270Nm. Instantaneous power response help the BMW 520i Sedan perform 0-100km/h in 8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 226km/h. Simultaneous efficiency improvements are reflected in average fuel consumption (as per EU test cycle, depending on tyre format) of 6.4-6.7litres and C02 emissions of 149-155grams per kilometre. The BMW 520i is fitted with a BMW 6 speed auto transmission.
In the new BMW 528i, with modified turbocharging and injection technology, the four cylinder engine develops maximum power of 245hp and peak torque of 350Nm. 0-100km/h is accomplished in 6.3 seconds and able to reach a top speed of 250km/h. The new BMW 528i Sedan achieves average fuel consumption of 6.5-6.8litres and C02 emissions of 152-158 grams per kilometre.
For the BMW 528i, the engine is mated with BMW’s 8 speed sport automatic transmission.
From model year 2012, a Driving Experience Control switch will be fitted as standard on the BMW 5 series sedan. This rocker switch on the centre console allows the driver to customise accelerator response characteristics, engine response, the power steering characteristics, the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) thresholds and, on automatic models, the shift characteristics of the transmission. Drivers can choose between “Comfort”, “Sport” or “Sport +” modes. All of the BMW 5 series models feature ECO PRO mode, which supports a relaxed, extra fuel efficient, low rpm driving style.
At the same time, ECO PRO mode programs electrically powered convenience functions like the heat seats and exterior mirrors and the air conditioning to operate at optimum efficiency. A special display in the instrument cluster lets the driver know by how much the driving range is being extended when using ECO PRO mode.
Another feature, Auto start-stop will be specified as standard on 2012 models BMW 5 series, makes another big contribution to efficiency. This system shuts the engine off when the vehicle is stopped in a traffic queue or at intersections, can be used on both manual and automatic models.
You can take full control of the BMW 5 series sedan functions by using the new iDrive. You can access the most important functions, such as the navigation system, telephone and music system, directly using the direct buttons. Favourite keys are also available for you to save settings such as radio stations, destinations and telephone numbers. The standard 7-inch Control Display displays all the information you need clearly and in high-quality colour. With the navigation system Professional, the display increases to 10.2 inches. You can use the "Back" key at any time to retrace your steps.
The BMW 5 Series leads its segment in another important area too; active and passive safety. Euro NCAP, US NCAP and the Australian NCAP are among the crash tests in which the 5 series sedan achieved the maximum rating of five stars.
Multi-phase and warm, restructured steels are intelligently combined to provide superior protection for passengers as well as increased safety for third parties involved in collisions. This is achieved by the vehicle absorbing forces in the deformation zones while load paths divert impact energy away from the passengers. If there is a collision with a pedestrian, an automatic system lifts the bonnet to cushion the impact.
The BMW 5 Series Sedan provides discreet support and active assistance to avoid dangerous situations. Radars and cameras monitor conditions and warn the driver of lane changes and vehicles coming too close.
At the rear of the vehicle the Lane Change Warning uses radar sensors to inform the driver via a symbol on the wing mirror if there is a vehicle currently in their blind spot or if a vehicle is approaching quickly from the rear. As soon as the driver uses the indicator to change lanes, they are warned in potentially dangerous situations by a flashing LED signal and vibrations.
The camera positioned at the front of the vehicle assists the Lane Departure Warning system. When traveling above 70 km/h the system monitors road markings and their position versus the car as well as the edge of the road or lane. The system is activated whenever the vehicle leaves its current lane unintentionally and alerts the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate. When the driver indicates their intention to change the lane by using the indicator, there is no warning signal.
The standard safety features of the 5 series are Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), incl. Traction Mode (DTC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), CBC and Braking Assistant and full array of Airbags which comprises of airbags for driver and passenger: including side airbag; front and rear head airbags)

I have owned nothing but BMW products, when I drive a bmw I don't really care that it has 400 hp, i do however like knowing its there if I ever need or want to use it. BMW is prestige , sex, luxury, the ultimate driving machine period, I enjoy driving my cars and and I appreciated this review because it didn't get all Motörhead and technical, there are many other reviews that demonstrate the power of the engine so instead of knocking this very well done review just hop over to another.
