Toyota FT-86 II Concept drop dead gorgeous

It's been a while since Toyota has a fulfilling yet affordable sports car, the FT-86 could be it. The FT-86 concept now codenamed FT-86 II (previously shown at Geneva Motorshow) has some new changes to the exterior design especially the A-pillars and the front end of the car to comply the pedestrian impact regulations. According to sources, test driver has commented the previous A-pillar on the car creates "a type of tunnel vision" which makes visibility a bit of concern especially during high speed. The new A-pillar design has certainly solved the problem.

The final production design is almost there and according to Toyota, the Toyota FT-86 II Concept give us the clearest indication yet as to the final design of high anticipated FR sports coupe that will debut in 2012. The final engine specs is not confirmed and we will soon find out on December at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Heritage – Half a Century of Passion for Sporting Performance
'When the Toyota 2000 GT was built, I was eleven years old – and I loved it. I said: "I want to drive something like this when I grow up". My dream came true when I drove a 2000 GT in a vintage car rally. That was a really great experience.

'I want young people to feel those same desires when they see a new Toyota sports car. I want to transfer the thrill of the race track to our vehicles, and make driving fun and exciting for our customers.'

Akio Toyoda – President, Toyota Motor Corporation

Since Toyota began the development of its 2-cylinder boxer engined Sports 800 in 1962, the company has maintained a long history of creating exciting, driver-focused sports cars that have proved as popular with the public as they have been successful in competition.

The beautiful 2000 GT, first displayed at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show, helped establish the company's global reputation as a sports car manufacturer. This 2.0 litre straight-six-powered coupe finished third in the 1966 Japanese GP and went on to establish three world endurance records, including the fastest average speed continuously over 16,000 kilometres – 207km/h.

A convertible 2000 GT appeared in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice. Sadly – created as a movie one-off merely because the film's star, Sean Connery, could not fit comfortably in the standard coupe – it was never made commercially available.

In the US, former Le Mans winner Carroll Shelby entered the 2000 GT in the 1968 Sports Car Club of America's C-Production category. Despite little development, the lead car notched up four wins against the hitherto dominant Porsche 911.

In response to the focus of the annual Japanese Grand Prix on sports racing cars with larger engines, Toyota launched its first purpose-built racer in 1968, the Toyota 7, which featured a mid-mounted, 3.0 litre V8 subsequently upgraded to 5.0 litres. The 1970 Toyota 7 Turbo was the world's first turbo-engined racing car.

Before its launch in 1984, Toyota appointed legendary US racing driver Dan Gurney for the testing and development of the MR2. Toyota has always understood the value of motorsport and a racing driver's analytically skills for improving its road-going models. And the MR2 gained a well-deserved reputation as one of the best handling sports cars of all time.

Seven generations of the Celica were sold throughout the world for 36 years between 1970 and 2006. The first Celicas incorporated rear-wheel drive powertrains, and were praised by sports car enthusiasts for their agility. The Celica GT, introduced in Europe in 1974, featured a five-speed transmission and wider tyres.

Appealing strongly to the European market, the redesigned Celica of 1985 featured front-wheel drive and the powerful, 2.0 litre 3S-GE engine.

The Celica also achieved considerable success in competition. The Celica Twin-Cam Turbo achieved three consecutive Safari Rally wins between 1984 and 1986. Taking its first World Rally Championship win in Australia in 1989, the all-wheel drive Celica GT-Four went on to record back-to-back WRC driver's and manufacturer's titles in 1993 and 1994. The GT-Four was the first Japanese car to win both driver's and manufacturer's WRC titles.

Toyota's Supra was launched in 1979. The first two generations of the car were based on the Celica, the Supra only becoming a model in its own right with the third generation car of 1986. Its roots may be traced back to the 2000 GT, all four generations boasting straight-six engines and rear-wheel drive.

Engine cubic capacity rose with each generation from 2.5 litres to 2.7 and then 3.0 litres, culminating in the 1993 model year. VI Supra's 320 hp engine with sequential turbocharging, which gave the car a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 5.2 seconds, and a governed maximum speed of 250km/h.

With its reputation for delivering pure excitement and embodying the fundamental joy of driving, the Corolla Levin AE86 is the inspiration behind Toyota's latest sports car concept, the Future Toyota-86 II.

The Corolla Levin AE86's front engine, rear-wheel drive powertrain, compact dimensions, light weight, impeccable balance and superior power-to-weight ratio made it the must-have choice for rallying and circuit driving throughout its 1983-1987 production life. Even today, the AE86 is still a popular choice with private rallying teams.

Sharing its predecessor's front engine, rear-wheel drive credentials, the FT-86 II concept introduces a new generation of sports car which perfectly recaptures the exhilarating spirit of the last Corolla Levin AE 86.

Passion is Back: FT-86 II concept Gives Form to the Intrinsic Joy of Driving
With the proportions of its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin paying homage to Toyota's illustrious sports car history, the dynamic power of the FT-86 II concept gives the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota's next sports car.

The FT-86 II is an entirely driver-oriented concept, designed to give form to the intrinsic joy of driving through precise, instantaneous responses to even the smallest throttle or steering input, for those who regard driving as a passion rather than a necessity.

Under a design concept that Toyota's European Design Development centre, ED2, has dubbed 'Functional Beauty', its bold, sweeping form has been generated entirely through the constraints of function, and aerodynamics developed from F1 technology.

Its low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the engineering hard points, the FT-86 II concept's muscular body work has been made as compact as possible. Featuring a long, 2,570mm wheelbase, the concept is 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and just 1,270mm high.

Rather than relying on a heavy, large displacement powertrain for its performance, the FT-86 II returns to Toyota's sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine and a 6-speed manual transmission with compact dimensions, light weight and a low centre of gravity for the best possible power-to-weight ratio.

Both powertrain and driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high speed stability and dynamic agility. Allied to a front engine, rear-wheel drive format, this awards the FT-86 II lively, accessible performance, highly engaging, readily-exploitable dynamic abilities and maximum driving pleasure.

The FT-86 II concept is the result of an August 2009 announcement that Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries will launch a jointly developed compact rear-wheel drive sports car. European sales of Toyota's new sports car will begin in 2012.

Audi Q5 still the top selling premium SUV in its CC class in Brunei

  • 437,792 automobiles with quattro drive produced in 2010
  • Broadest all-wheel drive model lineup in premium segment
  • Audi A4 and Audi A8 “2011 All-wheel Drive Cars of the Year”
  • Audi Q5 still the top selling premium SUV in its CC class in Brunei

In 2010, Audi once again sold more automobiles with all-wheel drive than any other premium manufacturer. The brand with the four rings produced 437,792 vehicles with quattro drive last year. In the year in which Audi celebrated “30 years of quattro,” around 38 percent of all cars produced worldwide were equipped with the all-wheel drive technology. With 74,262 new car registrations for all-wheel drive models, Audi also topped the competition in Germany.

The most popular Audi model with quattro drive in 2010 was the Audi Q5, 155,025 units of which were built. In the months ahead, the brand will further expand its all-wheel drive lineup in the SUV segment with the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro and the compact Q3. But it is not just SUV drivers who are turning to quattro; the all-wheel drive technology is a popular choice of Audi customers for all other model lines as well. From the Audi A3 to the A8, nearly one quarter of the automobiles produced in 2010 had quattro on board.

“quattro is one of the Audi brand’s greatest success stories, and today we are writing what may well be its most exciting chapter,” says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales at AUDI AG. “As we move down the road toward electric mobility, we see entirely new possibilities for quattro technology. The electric quattro of the future will be even more agile, safer and – above all – more efficient,” adds Schwarzenbauer.

Audi customers today can choose from more than 130 quattro model variants, taking all the different body types, engine versions and transmission options into account. Audi thus offers by far the widest range of all-wheel drive models in the premium segment. There are also a number of technical solutions for delivering power to all four wheels. Behind the successful quattro principle are four different technologies, which Audi is constantly refining in order to build the ideal all-wheel drive system for each vehicle concept. The latest evolutionary stage of the quattro system featuring a crown-gear center differential and torque vectoring is available in the Audi RS 5, A7 Sportback and the new A6.

The quattro drive system also recorded yet another success in the voting for the “2011 All-wheel Drive Car of the Year.” As in 2010, more than 119,000 readers of the trade journal Auto Bild Allrad chose the Audi A4 (“All-wheel drive cars from €25,000 to 40,000”) and the A8 (“All-wheel drive cars over €40,000”) as the winners of their respective classes. This marks the sixth year in a row that Audi has had two winners in this competition. Three second-place finishes round out the brand’s outstanding results this year. The readers of Auto Bild Allrad had a total of 136 vehicles in nine categories from which to choose. Dr. Hans-Peter Kleebinder, Head of Marketing Germany, accepted the coveted awards on behalf of Audi in Frankfurt recently.

Meanwhile in Brunei, the much in demand Audi Q5 maintains the lead as the top selling premium SUV in its CC class (1600-2000cc) since 2010. The brand’s sole dealer/importer T.C.Y. Motors offers the Audi Q5 with the 2.0 TFSI petrol engine, Audi Drive Select, Side Assist, B&O audio system and 19 inch wheels with Quattro permanent all wheel drive as standard.

The BMW X3 has been a top selling Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and has been awarded twice as the “Off-Roader of the Year” in succession (in 2006 and 2007) by Germany’s Off Road magazine. The latest successor to the BMW X3 is already here and it looks promising with its improve driving comfort, agility and efficiency. The new BMW X3 has already been hailed “Off-Roader of the Year” by readers of Germany’s Off Road magazine in the “SUV” category just months after its international launch.

QAF Auto Sdn Bhd is offering two versions of the BMW X3 to the Brunei market: the BMW X3 xDrive20d and BMW X3 xDrive28i. The new BMW X3 is much more refined and dynamic than its predecessor. The body design is simply pronounce elegance while still maintaining the tough look to it.

The facial of X3 comes with forward slanting BMW kidney grille, a large headlight assembly equipped with round headlights, fog lamps, a tough looking yet sporty front apron and contoured bonnet. Large flared wheel arches and short distance between the front axle and the instrument panel are unique features of the BMW X series. The rear end is very clean and the body lines simply come in all the right places. The T shape taillights is a characteristic feature of an X3

The X3 comes with full time four-wheel drive technology that promises fun driving experience on and off the road. Underneath the X3 carriage is a newly developed suspension and optimized xDrive. According to BMW, the electronic control unit, which is interlinked with the DSC Dynamic Stability Control, counteracts at an early stage to oversteer or understeer through fast and precise response. By means of innovative tuning designed to enhance driving dynamics, the intelligent four-wheel drive technology optimizes not only traction, but, above all, handling in bends.

The newly designed suspension comes with a combination of a double joint spring-strut at the front and a five-link rear axle offers in conjunction with a widened track (92 mm wider than that of the predecessor). This new changes is necessary for improving the X3’s agility and driving comfort.

The BMW X3 xDrive20d is equipped with an improved turbo diesel engine providing better performance and higher efficiency. The engine is a 2.0Litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine that produces 135kW/184 horsepower at 4,000rpm and a torque of 380Nm. This powerplant can deliver acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 8.5seconds and reaches a top speed of 210km/h. The fuel consumption on this car is remarkable with average fuel consumption of 5.6litres/100km and it sets a new benchmark for efficiency in this vehicle segment.

Average fuel consumption for the BMW X3 xDrive28i is 9.0litres/100km.

Both of the new BMW X3 features an Auto Start Stop function in conjunction with 8 speed automatic transmission. When stopping at road junctions or in a traffic jam, the engine is automatically switched off. This not only improves lowering fuel consumption but also improves the level of quietness and comfort. In addition to the Auto start stop function, the X3 is equipped with brake energy regeneration, EPS Electric Power Steering, demand-controlled ancillary components, intelligent lightweight construction and tyres with reduced rolling resistance which contribute towards lowering fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels.

The interior of the X3 is nothing short of premium. The design of the X3 interior is a combination of high grade materials, generous and variable spatial concept and a characteristic three dimensional surface design which gives the X3 a modern, premium ambience and intelligent functionality. The seats are wrapped with premium leather in either black or beige colour. The X3 has quite no. of large storage compartments, trays and cup holders for the front and rear. The luggage compartment volume is between 550 and 1,600 litres which marks the X3 the best in its segment.
