FORD FLEET ELECTRIFIES ASIA

Ford's first ever plug-in hybrid; Ford C-MAX Energi

FORD FLEET ELECTRIFIES ASIA

SHANGHAI, China – Ford's vision of a sustainable future was put on show to nearly 300 journalists in China yesterday ahead of Auto Shanghai 2011, the biggest car show in the region.

During Ford’s New Energy Conference at the Shanghai Fashion Centre, Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford Asia Pacific and Africa, and Nancy Gioia, Ford Motor Company's director of Global Electrification, said that while New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) today comprised just one per cent of Ford's global sales, they expected that by 2020 electrified vehicles would form 10 to 25 per cent of the company’s global sales.

Ford Focus Electric

Hinrichs and Gioia shared the stage with three NEVs that are part of a demonstration fleet being brought to China this year, and which use three different types of technology; the Fusion Hybrid, which is already America's most fuel efficient mid-size sedan; the C-MAX Energi, Ford's first ever plug-in hybrid; and the battery powered Focus Electric, Ford's first zero-emissions passenger car.

"New Energy Vehicles are a critical part of Ford's strategy," Hinrichs said in an interview with @Ford. "In the near term, we're providing an opportunity to electrify our global platform, giving us the flexibility to go one direction or another based on capability and consumer needs. In the long term, working from the global platform gives us the volume and scale to compete at a price point that will attract more customers."

Henry Ford, together with Thomas Edison, first developed an electric car in 1913, but by the 1930s the concept had been defeated by the high cost relative to cars powered by internal combustion engines, Gioia told journalists. Ford's new generation of electrified vehicles was able to overcome some of the higher production costs by using the same components across several different platforms. That meant that the company could develop several different types of NEVs at the same time, and keep its options open as consumers become familiar with the new technologies.

"A key part of our strategy is the sharing of components between our hybrid and our plug-in hybrid. We actually use the exact same motor, generator, converter, and many other components. They are not similar – they are identical. That helps with volume, scale and quality, and ultimately the affordability for the consumer," said Gioia.

Unlike some of its competitors, Ford is taking a broad approach in developing hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric technologies, which would be suited to customers in different situations.

"We have to have customer driven solutions. If somebody lives in a densely populated city and doesn't drive many miles, a battery electric vehicle could be perfect. If they have a lot of city driving and some distance driving on weekends, a plug-in vehicle may be perfect. If they don't have access to charge infrastructure but still want the benefit of fuel efficiency, the hybrid will work," said Gioia.

"As these technologies roll out, we are electrifying our highest volume global platforms – the benefit is that we don't have to be perfect in guessing where the market will go. We produce these down the same line, work with the same suppliers, and educate our workforce, consumers and dealer network simultaneously – so as one type is needed more in one region than another, we will have the technology ready to go in the most affordable and sustainable way."

Audi relying on ultra lightweight technology for Le Mans

Audi R18 TDI is an engineer's dream machine

Audi relying on ultra lightweight technology for Le Mans

  • Only seven weeks before the 24 Hours of Le Mans
  • Company’s lightweight technology expertise is visible
  • Audi R18 TDI with innovative detail design solutions

Ingolstadt, April 21, 2011 - Lightweight design expertise expressed visually: This is the principle under which Audi enters the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. The three Audi R18 TDI cars, which join the grid for the French endurance classic on June 11/12 and which make their first public appearance over the Easter weekend at the Le Mans test day, perfectly embodies - also visually - Audi’s core expertise in lightweight technology.

The livery of the three Audi Sport Team Joest Audi R18 TDI cars is dominated by puristic carbon fiber. The car of last year’s Le Mans winners carrying start number "1" even runs in the characteristic black of the extremely light and, at the same time, high-strength material, which also plays an increasingly important role in the development of new production cars.

"Carbon fiber is ideally suited for lightweight design and construction," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "We have deliberately made this material and the ultra lightweight technology visual for Le Mans. Lightweight design has occupied us for many years in motorsport. Everything that we have learnt over the years and especially about lightweight design and construction during development of the R18 TDI will also be available for our customers in the future - either in the form of greater performance or in the shape of low fuel consumption and lower emissions."

The R18 TDI is a particularly authentic ambassador for the company’s lightweight technology which will be bundled by the term ‘ultra’ in the future. "Lightweight design is a very important factor at Le Mans because a light car is also always a more efficient car," says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. This year, it is of even greater significance since the regulations stipulate smaller engines producing less power - for the Audi R18 TDI this means over 540 hp (397 kW).

Although there is a minimum weight of 900 kilograms for LMP1 cars at Le Mans, the target is to produce a car weighing significantly less than this limit in order to optimize the weight distribution with the help of ballast and to lower the center of gravity as much as possible.

"With the R18 TDI every component was optimized logically with regard to weight," stresses Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Technology at Audi Sport. "The same applied to the chassis and the bodywork, the gearbox and the engine. We scoured the car for every superfluous gram."

The carbon monocoque produced in a single-piece, for which a highly complex manufacturing process was developed and which is an impressive proof of the company’s lightweight design expertise, is not only revolutionary for a Le Mans sports car. The same applies for the bodywork which was lightened by 40 kilograms between the first and second version. "Such a consequent lightweight design is a high technical challenge," says Christopher Reinke, Technical Project Leader at Audi Sport.

The V6 TDI engine in the R18 TDI is about 25 percent lighter than the V10 TDI engine in its predecessor. "On one hand through downsizing, but also to a certain extent because we explored completely new directions and chose an unusual engine concept," explains Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport.

The new six-speed gearbox, which has a high amount of carbon-fiber composite material, and the complete LED headlights also help to save weight. It was also possible to omit the electric cooling of the light-emitting diodes in the headlights commonly found in production cars. Because the gearshift is no longer activated pneumatically but rather electrically, the R18 TDI requires no more pneumatic system. Optimized airflow through the cockpit should make air-conditioning redundant.

"The Audi R18 TDI is equipped with many innovative solutions," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich proudly. "It was built for regulations specifically targeting future technologies - and with the background enabling these technologies to be introduced into road going cars in the future. This is what makes sport prototypes so interesting for Audi. That we will now see the first impact of Audi ultra lightweight technology at Le Mans demonstrates just how motorsport and production line development go hand in hand at Audi. I’m convinced that ultra will be mentioned in one breath with terms like quattro or TDI in a few years."

New Generation VW Beetle heading to Shanghai Show

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

2012 VW Beetle

Beetle lovers rejoice, here comes the long awaited successor to the VW Beetle. The 2012 VW Beetle is set to be reveal in Shanghai show. The next generation Beetle shows quite mature design yet still draws the same design cues from the very 1st Beetle.

The 2012 Beetle somehow differentiate itself from the previous generation with its wider fenders, a flatter roof line and slightly lifted rear end which makes it more similar to the first generation beetle.

In the UK, the new Beetle comes with a choice of four engines: three petrol - a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, a 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 2.0-litre TSI 200 PS; and one diesel - a 1.6-litre 105 PS with BlueMotion Technology. According to the press release, the 1.6litre diesel engine equipped with BlueMotion Technology together with Stop/Start and battery regeneration can achieve fuel consumption of 65.7mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 112g/km.

Very familiar interior design cues as the VW Golf variants

NEW GENERATION BEETLE REVEALED AT SHANGHAI SHOW

* New generation of Volkswagen Beetle unveiled in Shanghai, New York and Berlin

* All-new vehicle draws design cues from original Beetle launched 73 years ago

* Efficient engines and innovative features combine with heritage to make a ‘modern classic'

* On sale in North America in autumn 2011, then mainland Europe; UK early in 2012

Volkswagen has unveiled the latest generation Beetle in Shanghai on the eve of the city's motor show, marking a new era in this iconic car's history. The latest generation moves away from design of the New Beetle of 1998 and instead draws on cues from the original and Beetle Ragster concept shown in Detroit in 2005. As such it's longer, wider and lower, giving a more masculine and dynamic appearance.

The Beetle now measures 4,278 mm in length (+152 mm), 1,808 mm in width (+84 mm) and 1,486 in height (-12 mm). The track width front and rear, as well as the wheelbase at 2,537 mm, are also increased. Overseen by Walter de Silva (Volkswagen Group) and Klaus Bischoff (Volkswagen Brand), with Marc Lichte the team leader for exterior design, the car's new proportions mean the roof extends back further, the windscreen is shifted back and the rear section is now more akin to that of the original Beetle. The boot capacity is a practical 310 litres, up from 209 litres in the 1998 model. The Beetle has four seats, with a split-fold rear seat for added versatility.

Inside the cabin, the Beetle's designers created a modern, practical and distinctive appearance with easy to identify and ergonomic controls. Certain features, such as the glovebox and colour accent panels hark back to the original.

Three trim levels will be available - Beetle, Design and Sport - and each will be endowed with its own individual character and features. A wide range of innovative optional equipment will also be available, ranging from Keyless Access through satellite navigation systems and a panoramic sunroof to bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights - all of which are available for the first time on a Beetle.

In the UK, a choice of four engines will be offered: three petrol - a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, a 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 2.0-litre TSI 200 PS; and one diesel - a 1.6-litre 105 PS with BlueMotion Technology. Thanks to the addition of Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems the Beetle 1.6-litre 105 PS is estimated to have a combined fuel consumption of 65.7 mpg and carbon dioxide emissions of 112 g/km.

As well as being economical and environmentally sound, the Beetle is also built to be one of the safest cars on the road thanks not only to features such as standard ESP and six airbags but also a laser-welded and galvanised body structure which has one of the highest torsional rigidity values in the segment at 26,000 Nm/?. In addition the range-topping engine, the 2.0-litre 200 PS, will feature standard XDS electronic differential lock as fitted to the Golf GTI.

The new car will be available to order in the UK in the summer, with first cars arriving in showrooms early in 2012. More details will be available closer to launch.

When the original was launched in 1938, it was known simply as ‘the Volkswagen', quickly acquiring a raft of nicknames from across the world. Whatever the name, its popularity is not in question, with 21.5 million sold in the past 73 years.
